Falls energizing fruit

Quince - this fruit contains chlorogenic acid which is a compound shown to slow the release of glucose in the blood stream. It helps to reduce the dips of mood and energy when blood sugar crashes after a carb-rich meal. It's too tart to eat raw but is found in preserves and desserts.
Italian Prune Plums - this fruit contains compounds that help protect against UV-induced free radical damage that leads to premature wrinkling and sun spots. They are also 'of great interest' in preventing skin cancer. Try this recipe: combine 1/2 cup of balsamic vinegar, 1 Tbs of honey and 1 tsp. cinnamon in a saucepan. Bring it to a boil over medium heat until syrupy. Drizzle on plums and top with walnuts and feta cheese.
Cantaloupe - the fruit's vitamin C lowers the adrenal glands' output of the stress hormone cortisol. Vitamin A teams up with C in the fruit and reduces stress induced colds. One cup contains a full day of both nutrients.
Concord grapes - these tasty treats help reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and also helps promote a healthy blood pressure. After two weeks of consumption, you should notice a difference.
Figs - rich with rutin, a plant compound shown to ward off excess pounds. Try combining figs with chopped italian sausage and minced oregano, then toss with pasta or use as a topper for pizza.

Handy Home Solutions

Keep flies from invading your next picnic by cutting lemons into quarters and poke a dozen whole cloves into the fleshy part of each wedge. Flies don't like citrus and spicy scents, so the combination of lemon and cloves will ensure they take their hunger elsewhere.
Next time the fuzzy bee stings, place a slice of raw onion on it. The sulfur in the bulb is a natural detoxifier that neutralizes the venom.
Next time you open a musty smelling book, grab a used dryer sheet and place it in the center of it for a day or two. The sheets porous fibers will absorb the moisture and leave behind a laundry-fresh scent.
To avoid the sandy beach from entering your car, sprinkle your feet with baby powder before you leave. The powder will soak up excess moisture that causes sand to stick to the feet. Now you should be able to brush the sand off easily.
The next time you drop a trinket into the drain, grab a vacuum and slip a panty hose over the end. Typically the trinket will be in the U-bend. The vacuum will suck it out and the hose will keep it from entering the vacuum.
Keep your garden hydrated with charcoal. Break the briquettes into 1" pieces and sprinkle on the flower bed. The charcoal will retain rain and slowly release hose water into the ground. This will make the soil stay moist twice as long.

Blast fat and stay cool!

Kayak - when I recently visited the UP of Michigan I saw a lot of kayaking on Lake Superior. I thought that looked like fun and I should try it. This is why - It slims the upper body. It works the deltoids, latissimus dorsi and trapezius which sculps the shoulders and creates a sexy V-back. You will also burn 170 calories in 30 minutes.
Play in the pool - this last weekend I went swimming in the Mississippi which is flowing at speeds I couldn't even imagine. It was quite the workout! Splashing in the water can burn up to 200 calories in 30 minutes. If you have kids, hold them up in the air and tone the triceps, biceps and deltoids to eliminate bat wings and pit pudge.
Pattleboard - this I haven't tried. Balancing on the board strengthens the rectus abdominus. This will give you the 6-pack look! Then twisting will work the oblique muscles to develop the hourglass look. Balance poses in yoga will also do the same thing!!!
Water tubing - I did this a couple years ago with friends. I was surprised how sore my body was the next day and week! This helps tone the core muscles, especially the transverse abdominus. I also found that it toned my upper body as well.
Jump in the water! Work the fast-twitch muscles in the glutes, quads and hamstrings. These fibers contract with short bursts of power. Have fun and let loose. Take a few jumps and develope slimmer thighs and a perky tush.
You have my permission to have fun and let it all go!

Cell phone exhaustion?

Research found that 7 out of 10 women over age 50 have some degree of sensitivity to the electrical pollution caused by cell phones, cordless phones, computers and other wireless gadgets. Your cell phone should not be your alarm clock according to Louise Gittlemen, Phd., author of Zapped; Why Your Cell Phone Shouldn't Be Your Alarm Clock and 1,268 Way to Outsmart the Hazards of Electronic Pollution. Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) leads to inflammation in the body.
Another researcher found that EHS sufferers are in a state of chronic muscle contractions so their bodies store L-carnitine and CoQ10, leading to fatigue, pain and weakness according to Stephen Sinatra, M.D.. His own son had to overcome EHS. Dr. Sinatra recommends taking 100 to 200 mg of CoQ10 and 750mg to 1500 mg of L-carnitine daily to restore levels and ease symptoms of EHS.

Find ways to beat the heat!

Go for a dip and pass on SAD (seasonal affective disorder). Lounge around a pool for 30 minutes and erase blue moods within 3 days.
Avoid headaches and slip on the shades before the sun hits your eyes. Once the sun hits your eyes it signal the brain which causes headaches.
Dab your face with witch hazel to cool the face and tighten capillaries. It reduces summer puffiness in as little as 3 days.
Defend your skin and enjoy a half a grapefruit or an orange daily to fight agains UV rays.
Spritz the inside of your wrist to lower your blood and body temperature fast.
Reduce heat induced dizziness by rubbing the shins which are filled with accupressure points. Dizziness should disappear within 30 minutes.
Lie in the grass and take a whiff. The smell of grass turns on the brains calming alpha waves.
One cup of cantaloupe eaten can chase away heat-triggered fatigue.

Tips for great skin

Sun damaged skin:  Mix 1 Tbs. honey and 1 Tbs. yogurt together.  Apply the mixture and let it sit for 20 minutes before rinsing.  The yogurt will exfolliate your skin and the honey will moisturize and repair the skin on a cellular level.

Heal Cracked Lips with Licorice Oil.  Lips don't have oil glands which make them succeptable to drying out.  In the winter when the air is dry, it is even worse.  To soothe cracked lips, dab on licorice oil.  Licorice oil will ease inflammation and seal in moisture.  It also inactivates the virus that causes cold sore outbreaks.  Find the oil at HurrawBalm.com.

Dead Sea mud is great for banishing blemishes on the body.  If you cannot float in the dead sea, try buying some off of  Amazon.   Dead sea is great for clearing acne or psoriasis.  Researchers found that the mud's high sulfide level kills off the bacteria that leads to breakouts.

Get slim at the beach!

Fly a kite and tone your shoulders and arms.  Flying a kite is an effective upper-body workout.  Lifting your arms activates the deltoid, trapezius and tricep muscles.  This helps create definition in the shoulders and arms.  It also forces the heart to pump blood to the fingertips which increases calorie burning.  Be sure to pull the kite up and down against the wind to increase tone in triceps and biceps.

Play with kids at the beach.  Chasing your child in the sand can increase calories burned.  Don't forget to lift and swing the little ones to increase tone in the latissimus dorsi and rectus abdominus.  And then bend your knees and squat to pick up the little ones to increase tone in the lower body.

Volleyball for thighs!  Volleyball in the sand increase more calories burned than in the gym.  In the sand more demand is put on the hamstrings and quadraceps increasing tone in the legs.  Keep your arms straight when hitting the ball and create strong shoulders.

Don't forget to jump in the water especially when there are big waves.  Allow them to pull and tug at your body as you resist against them.  This movement is good for the transverse abdominus.  Then start jumping in the water and the obliques and hip flexors will be activated and toned.  Try walking laterally to increase tone in the adductors and abductors of the hips and legs.

Find a ball and kick it around.  The sand creates resistance that muscles must work against.  This is a great lower body workout and helps the body to burn more fat.  When you kick, twist your waste to the side to increase oblique work.

Have fun at the beach!  I do.  I swim against the current in the Mississippi...

4th of July in Munising, Michigan

We travelled to Munising, Michigan for the 4th of July.  Munising is located on the shores of Lake Superior and is one of the biggest secrets in the US.  It was actually featured on the Weather Channel.  We brought friends with us because we felt everyone needs to see what Munising has to offer. We had soooo much fun.
We started out visiting Munising Falls.  Munising falls is a fascinating adventure in the summer as well as in the winter.  In the summer it is falling through the air from top to bottom allowing you to walk behind it.  As a child I used to climb all over this beautiful sight all year.  In the winter it is fascinating because it freezes from top to bottom leaving one big iscicle.  Don't forget the snowshoes if you plan to visit in the winter.  Then we went on the Glass Bottom Boat Tour where we got to see sunken ships in Munising Bay.  They also showed us sights on Grand Island.  Grand island is an island as large as Manhattan Island and has echo lake in the center where you can catch trophy sized bass.  Murray Bay and surrounding waters abound with Salmon, Trout, Pike and Perch.  There is a bus tour, but you can also bike or hike the island.  This is an island I have never got to enjoy but I know many of my Munising friends have.  Next time I visit, I will enjoy it.
The next day we went to Wagner falls and view from the top of a scenic view where you have a great sight of Lake Superior.  And then we drove on to Autrain River beach.  The reason why I picked this beach is because it gives us the opportunity to swim the warm river or the cool Lake Superior.  I chose both.  I love swimming in Lake Superior.  My friends said they would take this day over any day in the carribean.
Then on to the next day where we got to see half of the 4th of July Parade and then went on Pictured Rocks Cruises.  What a blast!  They were very entertaining and gave us up close and personal views of the many colors formed in the sandstone rock formed by the many minerals in the rock.  Go on a nice day and see the best of Pictured Rocks!
The reason why I wanted to go is because Munising is so good at celebrating the 4th of July.  They have a huge parade and a wonderful celebration down at the dock on Lake Superior.  The night ends with some of the best fireworks I have ever seen.  The lake gives way to a big sky and the fireworks fill it nicely.
Thank you Munsing for the nice visit and we will see you again very soon!

Is your energy being zapped?

If you drink iced coffee for energy, you may want to check the ingredients.  Some syrup flavors contain sodium benzoate which will zap the energy out of your body.  The additive is also found in Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper and some flavored water and fruit drinks.  Coca Cola elimated its use in 2008.  Try ordering organic syrups next time you look to boost your energy with coffee.

More than half of women are deficient in Potassium which will cause fatigue.  This is due to fluctuating estrogen levels that leads to potassium loss.  Warm weather and high salt diets can cause a minimal drop in potassium making you feel fatigued.  A simple hair analysis can pinpoint potassium levels.
If you take magnesium and potassium together, you could feel more energized.  Aim for 400 mg of magnesium and 4,700 mg of potassium.  Eating food like spinach, avacados and bananas can help fill the patassium needs.
When it is hot outside try drinking coconut milk to help replace electrolytes lost through sweat.  Coconut milk contains 600 mg of potassium.
Himalayan salt helps promote a healthy mineral balance.  Place 1/4 cup of himilayan salt crystals in a jar and fill it with water.  Let it sit covered overnight.  Mix 1/2 tsp. of solution into a glass of water and drink 15 minutes before breakfast.
Stay energized by promoting a healthy mineral balance...

Quick bits about foot fungus, exercise and prescriptions

Lavender oil isn't just for a good night's sleep.  It also contains antifungal properties.  It helps to fight off  skin and nail problems such as althlete's foot.  Try adding 20 drops of lavender oil to a tub filled with hot water and soak your feet for 20 minutes at least twice a week.

Did you know that just thinking about working out makes you eat more?  Cornell University states that those who read about exercise ate 701 caleries of snack later on -- that turns out to be about 340 more calories than those who only answered personal questions.  Next time try thinking about the health benefits and not the slimming effects of exercise.  Exercise only slims if the diet is adjusted.

How are you feeling about the prescriptions your doctor has written for you?  You may want to check to see if the doctor has been paid to promote the med or not.  In 2009 eight pharamaceutical giants began to pay doctors for prescribing certain drugs and ProPublica wants to tell you about it.  Between 2009 - 2010, drugmakers gave doctors $320 million to promote their meds.

Myths that you should know for the summer.

Salt water will not heal a wound.  It will only increase the risk of infection.  Dab some unpasteurized honey on it instead.  Honey will destroy bacteria and start new cell growth.  Cover the honey with a bandage and let the healing begin.

Don't put ice on that sunburn!  Ice will hinder healing.  Instead, make it a spa night and soak in a cool bath containing black tea and oatmeal.  Both will cut healing time in half.  Add two cups of tea and one packet of Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment.

Go ahead and add Mayo to that next picnic salad.  Mayo reduces the amount of bacteria in salads which helps prevent food poisoning.  Add honey to your food before you leave home to give it time to kill off lingering germs before it hits the hot sun.

Don't use deet the next time you want to ward off mosquitos.  Use the oil of lemon eucalyptus which offers more protection than low concentrations of Deet.  Try Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent.

Milk can prolong flare-ups with poison ivy and does not soothe it.  Instead try washing the area with Dawn, Palmolive or Joy dishwashing detergent and let dry.  These cleaners will break down urushoil and reduce itching, redness and pain by 56 percent.

What to do with citrus peels?

Next time you go camping throw some orange peels in a baggie to take along.  Why?  Do you have a hard time starting the fire?  Toss the peels into the kindle before lighting the fire.  The flammable oils in the orange peels will help the peels catch on fire quickly and burn slowly which makes them ideal for starting a fire.  You will also experience a little aromatherapy.
Here's a recipe for summer ready skin:  1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup finely chopped lemon peel (or other citrus), then add enough olive oil to form a paste.  While in the shower, massage the citrus peel scrub in circular motion into your body.  The sugar and peel particle will slough away dead skin while the citric acid will act as an astrigent and tighten your pours.  The Vitamin C will refresh your skin and brighten it.
Does your glassware sparkle and shine?  If not, next time you do dishes drop 1/4 - 1/2 cup of citrus peels into the water and steep for 5 minutes.  Wash your dishes as normal.  The peels' citric acid will help dissolve the mineral deposits and soap scum that cause cloudiness.  Let it shine!
Remember those moth balls that grandma used to use?  Throw them out!  Cut off the foot of an old pair of panty hose and stuff 2-3 Tbs. of dried citrus peel in it.  Tie off the opening and place the sachet in your closet or storage trunk.  The citrus smell will repel moths and leave your clothes smelling fresh.
I love dipping bread in olive oil so here's a fresh idea!  Cut the peels of 3 lemons, 2 oranges, and 1 grapefruit.  Avoid the white pith and place them in a food processor with 1 cup of oil.  Pulse until well blended.  Let stand at room temperature for an hour.  Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.   It's perfect for salad dressing, fish or my favorite, dip bread into it!  Yummmm!

The Boat Pose (Paripurna Navasana)

Strengthens and tones the abdomen, legs and back.
Improves balance.
Tones the intestines.
Limbers the lega and hips.

Begin in a seated postition with your legs lengthened in front of you on the floor.  On an exhale, lean back and begin to raise your legs.  You may need to hold on to the back of the legs or place your hands on the floor behind you for support.  You may need to keep your legs bent until you are strong enough to lengthen them.  Your hands may be on the floor behind you, supporting your legs, or extended by the sides of your legs.  If you have the flexibility, you may hold onto your toes and go into the full version of the pose.  You may repeat this pose 2 -3 times to strenthen your back and abdominal muscles.  Please remember to breathe while holding the pose.
If you are straining while doing this pose, hold the pose for a shorter time and rest for a few breathes in between repeating the pose.  Be sure to take care of your body and do each pose with caution while listening to what your body has to say.

Why own a pet?

After a stressful day, go home and stare in your pets eyes for 2 1/2 minutes.  You will experience a 20 percent hike in oxytocin, a feel good hormone that banishes negative feelings and encourages calm and relaxation.
Dogs have been known to detect seizures before they occur.  Because dogs have this special sense it allows epileptic people to live life somewhat normal.
Dogs are nice to have if you have children.  Some dogs are sporty and young children like playing fetch with them especially if they have no siblings to play with.
Cats are adored by old ladies because of their mannerisms and cleanliness.
Horses have been used for various types of transportation for many years.  The Amish use horse and buggy for their main type of transportaion to this day.  They are handy in areas where vehicles cannot travel.  Their elegance is proven during official and historical functions like weddings of the British royalty such as Kate and Will.  They are also used in cities like New York for joy rides through main parks which also provides the owner with a means of earning a living.
If you have rodents, you should consider owning a pet, especially a cat.  Cats will eliminate all rats.
Constant care is needed with all pets. This includes visits to the veterinary clinic, cleaning and companionship. Some pets need to be groomed more than others.  Remember, pets are domesticated wild animals and may from time to time behave in an untamed manner.  Also, check with your city to see if you need a license to own your animal.

What is a chakra?

There are many definitions of what a Chakra is but the name originates from the Sanskrit name "wheel of light".  Chakra serves as a collection and transmission center for both subtle, or metaphysical, energy and concrete, or biophysical energy.
Chakras are either circular or vortices that are conical in shape.  According to Sanskrit sources, a circle describes a rotation of shakti, or feminine life energy which denotes yantras that direct reality and references the different nerve centers in the body.
If one or more of these chakras are out or blocked, there's a good chance our life is out of balance.  During my last conference, a man from India came to talk with us about this kundilini balance of the chakra system.  He mentioned that when we have unblocked each chakra people will be drawn to us.  They will want to be around us at all times.  Why not work towards balance in our lives?  Here is a quick summary about the chakra system:

First Chakra - Located at the base of the spine.  Its color is red.  The element is Earth which means it grounds us.  It's orientation is self preservation and its demon is Fear.

Second Chakra - Located in the genital area and deals with emotions and sexuality.  Its element is water so its purpose is movement and flow.  The color is orange and identifies with emotions.  Its demon is Guilt.

Third Chakra - Located in the solar plexus and its purpose is energy and will.  The element is fire so it likes to bring heat to the body.  The color is yellow and it identifies with the ego.  It helps with self-definition and the demon is Shame.

Fourth Chakra - Located in the chest so its element is air.  The color is green and it identifies with social identity.  The orientation is self-acceptance and its demon is Grief.

Fifth Chakra - Located in the throat and its element is sound.  The color is Bright Blue and it identifies with creative identity.  It's orientation is self-expression and the demon is Lies.

Sixth Chakra - Located between the brows its element is light.  Its purpose is seeing, intuition, insight.  The color is indigo and the orientation is self - reflection  The demon would be Illiusion.

Seventh Chakra - Located at the crown of the head.  The purpose is pure awareness, understanding, unity with the divine.  The color is violet or white and identifies with universal identity.  The orientation is self - knowledge and the demon is attachment or ignorance.

Miss Representation Movie

I watched this movie over the weekend and was horrified at the truth that I was unaware of.  The movie doesn't seem to give a resolution to the problem of women being miss represented.  I wanted to put this blog out to see if I could get any comments or ideas as to how women can move ahead in this world without intimidation or criticism.  As a business owner I have become concerned about our future as women.  This is not a stand alone world,  this is a support one another world and something we need to take action on.
This movie takes me back to the days of The Wizard of Oz.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judy_garland#The_Wizard_of_Oz  This is what I found on this site.  After Shirley Temple was turned down this is what they did to Judy Garland:  Garland was initially outfitted in a blonde wig for the part, but Freed and LeRoy decided against it shortly into filming. Her breasts were bound with tape and she was made to wear a special corset to flatten out her curves and make her appear younger; her blue gingham dress was also chosen for its blurring effect on her figure.
Although, that did not affect the succuss of the show:The Wizard of Oz was a tremendous critical success, though its high budget and promotions costs of an estimated $4 million coupled with the lower revenue generated by children's tickets meant that the film did not make a profit until it was re-released in the 1940s.[29] At the 1940 Academy Awards ceremony, Garland received an Academy Juvenile Award for her performances in 1939, including The Wizard of Oz and Babes in Arms.[30] Following this recognition, Garland became one of MGM's most bankable stars.
And yet she wasn't good enough.  When I was a child watching this movie, I did not care what Judy Garland looked like.  I cared about the story.  What the story was telling me.  Is it good?  Or is it bad...The story was good.  So were all the people in the film.  I don't remember what they looked like.

This paragraph was taken from www.missrepresenation.org.

When  the new documentary film Miss Representation premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, audiences were riveted, and Oprah Winfrey acquired its broadcast rights. Writer/Director Jennifer Siebel Newsom interwove stories from teenage girls with provocative interviews from the likes of Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Rosario Dawson, Dr. Jackson Katz, Dr. Jean Kilbourne, and Gloria Steinem to give us an inside look at the media and its message.
As the most persuasive and pervasive force of communication in our culture, media is educating yet another generation that a woman’s primary value lay in her youth, beauty and sexuality—and not in her capacity as a leader, making it difficult for women to obtain leadership positions and for girls to reach their full potential.
The film accumulates startling facts and statistics that leave audiences shaken, armed with a new perspective, and asking the question, “What can we do?”

Cope with chronic pain.

Research the pain you are feeling.  More than likely many people are experiencing the same pain.  The more knowledge you gain about your pain the more able you'll be able to cope with it.

Don't stop moving because you are in pain.  The more you sit, the tighter your muscles become due to lack of circulation.  Keep your muscles warm and nourished and be sure to get some exercise daily.  Go for a walk, swim or ride a bike.

Improve your diet.  Often times pain is a symptom of inflammation.  Saturated and trans fats can make inflammation worsen.  Find food that antioxidizes and provides vitamins to fight inflammation.  Try salmon, trout, nuts, seeds and olive or canola oils.  Spices like garlic, ginger, cinnamon and cumin also are helpful.  Also try to stick with whole grains which lower levels of C-reactive protein in blood-a marker for inflammation.

Get a massage or join a yoga class.  Many people who have received at least 6 - 12 months of massages or have practiced yoga consistently for 6 months or more have reduced their pain levels.  This is becuase yoga strengthens and lengthens muscles and massage increases circulation which provides fresh blood and nutrition to the muscles.

Try meditaiton.  Mindfulness-based techniques can reduce pain and anxiety and increase vitality.

Incorporate supplements.  Try omega-3 fatty acids for anti-inflammatory effects.  These fatty acids help to ease arthritis and back and neck pain.  Reasearch has shown that vitamin D deficiency has been linked to fibromyalgia and bone pain.  Talk to your doctor about what is best.

Cut car costs the easy way!

Keep the air filter clean.  Dirty air filters prevent sufficient air from reaching the engine.  This will cause a higher ratio of gas to be burned.  If you change your filter every 12 months or 12,000 miles, it can save you 50 cents per gallon.

Pump up the tires.  By the end of winter, most tires have low pressure due to every 10 degree drop in temperature the tire pressure drops.  Low pressure causes friction and creates a drag.  If you inflate to  the recommended pressure you could save 12 cents per gallon on gas and reduce your chance of a blowout.

Lighten the load.  Every 100 pounds of added weight reduces fule economy by 2 percent.  You could save up to 14 cents per gallon by reducing the load and remove unnecessary items.

Drive 55 MPH?  Unheard of!  Anyway, for every 10 miles over 55 mph reduces fuel economy by an average of five miles per gallon.  You spend an extra 3 cents per mile if you travel at 75 mph.  I better listen to this one!  YIKES!

Did you know the best day to get gas is on Wednesday?  If you wait to get gas for the weekend, you pay more.  I you wait until Monday, you pay more.

Use your cruise control and watch your fuel economy improve by 14 percent.  That will save you 51 cents per gallon.  I use cruise to stay within the speed limit.  Especially during a good song!  I save on speeding tickets.

Love those ads that tell you how special the big oil companies gas is?  Well, Maryland State Motor Fuel Lab did a study and found that brand-name gas isn't any cleaner or more efficient than generic gas - and brand-name gas will get you by an average of 20 cents more per gallon.

Is popcorn a diet food?

Popcorn is high in fiber and can indeed help you shed pounds.  The fiber in popcorn will help you end hunger pains.  Popcorn digests slowly and stays in your system longer and will help you feel fuller longer.  In certain studies, popcorn has been found to be more filling than  peanuts or a candy bar.  The candy bar because it is loaded with sugar and sugar is easily absorbed and stored in the body.  Popcorn will also help to build energy and improve your mood.
An air popper will be your best bet.  Popcorn from an air popper contains approximately 30 calories per cup.  Feel free to add some seasoning to it like seasoning salt or a dash of cayenne pepper for a bite.  If you prefer the easy micorwave popcorn, be sure to check the calorie content in each cup.  It could fool you and you could gain instead of lose.  I prefer the pops that say low calorie and low or no fat.  Try to stick with one that has about 20 calories per cup.

Help for body flaws

Belly Bloat:
White beans are loaded with potassium and can flush fluid and shrink your waist line by 2 inches a month.  Another benefit is that they block starch absorption and rev fat burn which will blast belly fat.  Try a cup a day.
Upper arm firmer:
Those sleeveless dresses getting you down?  Now that it is summer you may want to firm your arms.  Sit on a chair with your legs out in front of you.  Grip the edges and lift yourself off the seat.  When you are strong enough, scoot forward so your bum clears the chair.  Lower yourself as far as you can by bending your arms and then raise back up.  Repeat this 10 times twice daily.  Increase reps as you get stronger.
Cellulite Eraser:
Doing yoga for 20 minutes four times a week could smooth cellulite on the butt and thighs in as little as two months.  Try the half shoulder stand.  Lie on your back and bend the knees curling them towards your forehead.  Put your hands under your hips for support.  Hold for 10 deep breaths and then return to the starting point.  Repeat five times.
Fungus Fighter:
Apply Vicks Vaporub to infected toenails to clear up fungus.  The fungus fighting benefits are eucalyptus, menthol and camphor oils.  Massage in a dollop twice daily for at least three months.  Prior to clearing the fungus, when you want to dress up, put on Dr.'s Remedy enriched Nail Polish with tea tree oil and garlic extract which are natural antifungals.

Simple ways to love yourself!

Keep Birthday and Mother's day cards.  Also keep photo's of special times and simple sweet notes from friends and family that made you feel special.  Keep filling up the drawer and take time to open it and go through all of those special moments.  Just simple reminders of how special you are serve as power triggers and can turn your mood around.
Do you know that taking a break in the middle of the day will help you get more done?  Take a 30 minute break and read a magazine or listen to music and you will zip through the rest of your day!
Have you ever thought that talking to yourself makes you a strange person?  Well, don't be afraid to be your own best friend.  Next time you make a mistake, talk to yourself like you would your best friend.  If you focus too hard on your mistake negatively, it will set you up for another mistake.  Allow the tension to seep away and give yourself a pep talk.
Don't feel bad to indulge in a massage, soak in the tub or buy a new nail polish.  Just pick something you enjoy.  Delighting in indulgence will take away worries and lift your mood.  It will also boost your self confidence.

Spend less on gas

When you run your A/C you take one or two miles off your mileage. Save money and stay cool by turning on your A/C until your car cools down and then turn it off and press the "air recirculator" button.  Air recirculator is indicated by two arrows going in a circle. Your air will recirculate the chilled air inside the car and blow it back to you.  No more taxing the engine to keep cool.
Gas companies love to give out coupons to get you to walk through their door and make you a regular customer.  Look for gas coupons on grocery store receipts, coupon mailers and newpapers.  Also, check for promotions on gas company websites.
Credit cards offered by gas stations or regular credit cards offer cash back.  Discover Open Road care offers 2% cash back on up to $250.00 in gas purchases every billing cycle.  Go to PumpAndSave.com to learn more about cards the offer gas rebates.
Are you one of those that "top off" after filling up to round up the amount.  STOP!  Any extra gas you pump into the vapor line returns right into the station's storage tank.  The pump's vapor recovery system starts drawing hazordous fumes so they aren't released into the air.  Only pay for what goes into your tank.

Lower your blood pressure with food.

Did you know 65 million people have hypertension?  Here's what you can do to help prevent high blood pressure and a heart attack.
Butternut squash helps to flush out salt.  One cup contains 1,000 mg of potassium which helps to flush out almost 1 teaspoon of salt and lowers your blood pressure.  Other foods that contain potassium are:  spinach, dried fruit, refried beans and tomato sauce.
Sesame oil reduces the need for medicine by consuming 1oz of the oil daily.  After two months it can drop  your blood pressure by 32 points.  Sesame oil helps to relax blood pressure walls.  Drizzle some on your salad, cooked vegetables, noodles or your butternut squash!
High fiber diets help to diminish sugar spikes.  77% of people who ate a high fiber diet controlled their blood pressure as soon as one month.  Sugar is a proven high blood pressure trigger.  Eat a generous cup of lentils, baked beans, two cups of raspberries or a large artichoke.
Yogurt can lower your pressure by 25%.  The bacteria in yogurt acts like pressure lowering ACE inhibitor with no side effects.  Be sure to choose a brand that says, "contains live bacterial cultures."
Sipping 4 oz. of beet juice will lower your blood pressure 10 points for 24 hours.  Beet juice contains nitrate, a natural plant compound that's converted into artery-relaxing nitric oxide in the digestive tract.  Find the juice in health food stores or click the link on this post.  Feel free to mix a little pineapple, grape or apple juice with it.

Vision health and Red Wine

Drinking red wine is one of my favorite things to do.  Here's a good reason to follow in my footsteps.
Drinking a glass of red wine a day helps to lower bad cholesterol, reduces the risk of dangerous blood clots and helps to prevent Alzheimer's disease.
A compound found in  wine called Resveratrol, helps to block out and reverse the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the retina that leads to blindness in older adults.
1,000 mg of Omega 3s also block eye-cell damage that leads to macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in adults over 55.

Don't forget to drink your daily glass of wine....

Smooth cellulite and shrink vericose veins by 35%

Cellulite is often a buildup of toxins that cause connective tissue to weaken.  Weakened connective tissue will allow fat cells to rise to the surface.  Receiving a daily massage increases the lymphatic drainage of toxins in troubled areas.  Massage can reduce cellulite appearance by up to 50%.  Starting at the furthest point away from your heart, massage olive oil into the skin in long deep strokes as you move closer to the heart.  Or call your Massage Therapist and have them help you out!
Chinese Medicine has traditionally used hawthorn berries to control vericose swelling.  Mao Sh Ni, M.D. suggests taking 350 mg of this supplement daily.  Try Nature's way Hawthorn Berries.  The berries contains anti-inflammatory saponins and antioxidant bioflavonoids.  Both of these ingredients will help veins to appear noticeably smaller.

Fix your knotted necklace and brighten your smile ;o)

How many times have you had to struggle taking a know out of your necklace.  I have been known to throw out a white flag and find another necklace to wear.  Here's what to do:
Place the necklace on a hard surface that will not stain.  Place a few drops of baby oil on the knot to lubricate the metal.  Find a safety pin and gently pull the knot apart.  Gently wipe the oil off of the necklace and it should be ready to go.
How much money have you spent whitening your teeth?  Do you know it could only cost a couple of dollars?  To eliminate stains, wipe your teeth with the inside of an orange peel once a week for 2 minutes before brushing.  The peel's astringent properties will polish andy stains and plaque while the vitamin C will help fight bacteria.

Forward Fold:  Uttanasana

Trying to find your focus after a stressful day at work can be impossible.  Try this yoga pose to clear your mind.
Stand with your feet hip-width apart and inhale as you raise your hands to the sky (arms are extended above the head).  Exhale as you lower your arms bending through the hips into your forward fold.  As you continue to move forward keep the knees bent. If your hands do not reach the ground, either hold onto your elbows and place two yoga blocks under your shoulders and allow your hands to rest on them.  Hold for 1 minute.  The rush of oxygen-rich blood to the brain will make you feel more alert.

Protecting our water

There are many ways to protect our planet and our water supply.  Many ideas seem too simple to pass by.  Here are a few.
Join your local clean-up day for your ocean, stream, lake or river.  This is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and get a little exercise too.  Take a friend or two along and have a day with friends while doing to the world some good.
Take a few minutes off your shower time.  If you shave in the shower, shut the water off while you shave.  Next time you go to the gym, bring your own towel to cut down waste at the gym.  Shut the water off while you bruch your teeth.  Shut the water off while you wash the dishes.  Rinse the dishes after you have washed all of them.
Levi's has a new water-less rigid-finish jean that uses 96 percent less water to produce.  Regular jeans are washed 3 -10 times before you see them in the store.
Give a gift of clean water at Water Aid's shop online.  For $30 you can buy a villager in Africa, Asia or the Pacific clean water for life.  $50 will buy four faucets for a village.  Visit wateraidamerica.org
Take a vacation and vounteer to help scientists measure the impact of climate change on glacier-capped mountains.  You can also survey tropical reefs through organizations like Earthwatch institute or Reef Check.  earthwatch.org, reefcheck.org
Go organic when you buy cotton.  Cotton is farmed with pesticides and it pollutes our waterways.  American Apparell has some cotton choices for you to stay in style with organic cotton.

These are just a few of the many ways to save our planet and our water supply.  Let us know if you have more information on saving this planet.

Save the Seeds!

During the Halloween holiday as children we always carved pumpkins into funny little faces.  My mother made no waste of the spooky holiday tradition.  She would save the seeds for eating later.  She would wash them up, put salt on them and roast them in the oven.  We would gobble them up as fast as we could.  They were a fun and delicious treat.  What we didn't know was the fact that they were packed with healthy nutrients.  My mother was smarter than we thought.
In both squash and pumpkin seeds are nutrients to include protien, zinc, magnesium, iron, and phosphorus.  To copy my mothers snack, wash off the pulp, dry the seeds on a paper towel.  Toss with a bit of olive oil and seasonings such as salt, pepper, cayenne, garlic powder, cinnamon or whatever makes you happy.  Spread the seeds on parchment paper or aluminum foil on a baking sheet.  Bake at 350 degrees for 15 - 20 minutes or until they start to brown.  Allow to cool and enjoy!

Where do the symbols of Easter come from?

The lamb - In the jewish faith the lamb symbolizes God's mercy and deliverance from slavery long before Christ.  Long ago it was believed that when the blood of a lamb was spread on their doors the angel of death would pass over them.  This allowed the Israelites to leave Egypt for the Promised Land.  Christians call Jesus "The Lamb of God" who was sacrificed to free the world from sin.

Easter Bunny and the eggs - The bunny was born a bird according to the Anglo-Saxon folklore.  During a long cold winter he nearly lost his life.  Eostore, the Goddess of Spring, arrived late that year.  Eostore found the freezing bird and saved him by turning him into a snow hare.  In memory of his past she gave the hare the ability to lay eggs in all colors of the rainbow on one day each year.  The hare gave these colored eggs to children who had been good that year.

Eggs seen as signs of renewal - Going back to 5,000 B.C. eggs have been colored and given as gifts of friendship to celebrate the renewal of life and nature that spring brings.  Europe adopted the tradition and the German settlers brought the practice to the United States along with the tale of the Easter Bunny and decorating trees and bushes with eggs during the Easter season.

Lilies and Easter - Christians brought lilies into the Easter  celebration because they were said to have sprung from the ground where Jesus's tears fell on the night before he was crucified.  The flowers symbolize everlasting life and are dubbed "white-robed apostles of hope".

Easter Chicks - Chicks symbolize new life and have become a staple in Easter decorations.  In the United States they are second to the Bunny but in Norway the kids wait for the fabled Easter Chick.

spicy lemonade diet

Studies have shown that you can melt 16 pounds in four days drinking a cocktail of lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup.  The d-limonen in lemon boosts the liver's ability to break down fat.  Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin which improves metabolism and maple syrup helps prevent the breakdown of calorie-hungry muscles.
Goglia recommends having a whey protein shake in the morning for breakfast followed by a glass of water with 2 tbls. lemon juice, a pinch of cayenne and 1 Tbls. of maple syrup.  For lunch have a protein-veggie lunch and for dinner try fish and veggies.  Do this for 7 days and take 3 days off then 7 days on to lost 10 pounds.  You can repeat the cycle once every 6 months.
The spicy lemonade diet has been used as a 10 day cleanse where you only drink when you are hungry throughout the day and not eat anything else.  This type of cleanse is not recommended and diet suggested above is much healthier.  For more information visit http://www.livestrong.com/article/401331-spicy-lemonade-diet/

Healing yourself with fresh spring vegetables

Energize- Carrots contain compounds called carotenoids that improve blood sugar control which help ward off tiredness.  The Journal of Nutrition did a survey and found that people who had more intake of carotenoids had slimmer waistlines, less subcutaneous fat and visceral fat.

Detox - Radishes help cleanse the body of energy-draining toxins due to the phyto-chemical glucoraphasatin.  They also contain a mineral called molybdenum.  Molybdenum helps fight free radical damage.

Strength - Cabbage can help you get slim and strong.  Glucosinolate which is found in cabbage cause active muscles to  metabolize more fat for fuel.  The body then uses less glucose which helps your energy to stay steady.

Boost Immunity - Turnip roots and their greens are high in vitamin C.  Vitamin C is an anitoxidant which strengthens immunity, wards off weight gain and eases anxiety due to C's ability to ward off the stress hormone cortisol.

Reduce Tension - Artichokes are high in magnesium.  Magnesium has been known to calm stress and promote sound sleep.  Magnesium is also an antispasmodic to soothe muscle tension.

Flush Fat - Asparagus contains asparagine and potassium.  They are diuretics that flush belly-bloating water weight and fat-trapping toxins.  It also contains prebiotics that feed beneficial bacteria in the gut to promote weight loss.

Put it all together and make a salad...Yummm!

Craniosacral Therapy

I have been practicing Craniosacral Therapy for one year.  I have practiced on many people and have had many positive results.  This is a very calming and relaxing type of treatment.  It is a treatment being used by many massage therapists, osteopaths, naturopaths, chiropractors and physical therapy.
Craniosacral therapy taps into a motion call the craniosacral rhythm.  This rhythm is created by a wave of fluid which continuously flows in the space around the brain and spinal cord.  Due to the fact that the body is connected in all parts, this rhythm can be felt throughout your tissues.
Tension in your body can restrict the natural flow of the craniosacral rhythm.  Pracitioners use a gentle touch which is often less than a nickel's weight, to correct that blocked rhythm.  Releasing the blocked rhythm will help to release tension in the body.  The treatment is most often deeply relaxing.
For a craniosacral session, you lie fully clothed on a comfortable padded table.  No oil or traditional massage strokes will be used.  The therapist will start by placing their hand beneath a section of your spine, skull or tailbone and feel and listen to the craniosacral rhythm.  The therapists hand may also be placed on your ribs, shoulders, thighs or feet, and may hold the position for some time according to your needs.  The therapist may also combine other forms of bodywork in the same session to powerfully reinforce each other.
You may leave feeling energetic, sleepy or a little scattered.  If you fall asleep or don't feel much of anything at first, subtle but profound changes may be occurring that will help you heal over time.

How to melt away tension

To benefit your heart, learn how to relax your mind.  Read below....

1.  Learn to laugh.  Laughing helps to release tension by changing your mind in times when you usually feel tension or get upset.  Laughing reduces stress hormones that tax your heart and increase your load of feel good endorphins.  Children laugh 300 times a day while adults laugh about 15 times a day.  Feel like a child again and laugh.

2.  How many times have you heard that you need to exercise.  The statement holds true even today.  Exercise more.  Exercise helps your heart to be more efficient and lowers your heart rate in stressful situations.

3.  Do you ever check to see if you are still breathing?  Breathing deeply and allowing your lungs to bring in enough oxygen is very beneficial to the way you might be feeling.  Inhale through your nose deeply, and exhale through your mouth.  Exhale longer than the inhale to remove as much of the bad air as you can.  Then inhale deeply again.  Practice deep breathing when you are stress free so you remember to breathe under stressful situations.

4. Join a yoga class....

My favorite vacation?

Let's see...I've been to Disney World three times and counting. Perhaps I could call that my favorite vacation.  Ofcourse skiing at the porcupine mountains in the U.P. of Michigan is one of my favorite things to do.  California lost the race of one of my favorite vacations years ago.  I have to stick with Florida and Disney World.  I do hope to get there one more time.  What's your favorite vacation?

Dr. Weil: Is Colloidal Silver Safe?

Widely promoted as a cure-all for everything from ear infections and shingles to AIDS, colloidal silver is a solution of silver particles suspended in liquid. Promoters claim that colloidal silver is an alternative to antibiotics and can extend life and remedy mineral deficiencies that lead to a weakened immune system. Is any of this hype true?

I don't think so - the claims are unproven, and colloidal silver is not a substitute for antibiotics, or any other medications. Not only does the human body have absolutely no need for silver, it can be harmful:

•Silver can accumulate in the body and lead to a disfiguring skin condition called argyria, which causes bluish-gray skin pigmentation, especially around the nose and mouth, a color change that cannot be reversed.

•Long-term use of oral silver products has led to neurological problems including seizures, as well as kidney damage, stomach distress, headaches, fatigue and skin irritation.

•It can also interfere with the absorption of some drugs including tetracycline antibiotics and thyroid hormone supplements.

While it is true that silver is an effective germicide, it has limited usefulness in medicine. In 1999 the FDA banned the sale of all over-the-counter drugs containing colloidal silver and silver salts as these compounds haven't been recognized as safe. However the ban doesn't apply to dietary supplements containing colloidal silver because the FDA has no jurisdiction over such products, unless there are established safety issues. I would avoid all products containing colloidal silver.

Finding balance in a crushed world...

Do you find yourself totally crushed by the end of the day?  Do you fall into your chair and mold yourself there until the sun comes up again?  Although we feel that sitting in a chair or melting into a could is the right thing to do, it can also be the wrong thing to do.
Sometimes we need a motivator, a feel good reason to get up and move.  That's when I get up and do yoga or get a massage.  Massage is not a treat for me, it is a necessity to get me through the tough times in this world.  My biggest yoga practice is on the weekends.  I look forward to pulling out my mat and getting on it.  The poses I practice are far more challenging than I want them to be but I feel well spent and energized when I am through.  I take full advantage of savasana and meditation at the beginning and end of my class.  I love my yoga days!
Massage is another way to blow away stress for me.  I make sure I am there once or twice a month.  Depends on the stress level I am feeling.
Don't be fooled by the people that think yoga is only for those who are flexible and massage is only for the ones who have time to pamper themselves.  In my book, these are two necessities in my life!

A new yoga mat.

What to do with your old yoga mat

Use it as a nonstick mat for the trunk of your car or put it on the back seat to protect the upholstery from the muddy feet of your dog.
If you like extra cushioning under your yoga mat when doing yoga,  put it under your new one.  Or cut it up for knee pads when doing kneeling poses.  Or roll up the old mat and tie it together to make a bolster when you need support in floor poses.
Go to recycleyourmat.com to recycle the mat if necessary.
One more option.  My husband often asks if I have any old mats I want to get rid of.  He has some ideas on how to use old mats too!
What else could we do with our old mats?

Ustrasana - Camel Pose/Balasana - Childs Pose

Practicing this pose pose will increase flexibility in the spine and shoulders.  It will also nourish and revitalize the spinal nerves with a fresh blood supply, improve posture and stretch the abdomen which will help to reduce fat. It helps to open the throat area and relax the neck which is helpfor for asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory complaints.  It helps to open the chest which will help hunched backs and rounded shoulders.

Start on the floor kneeling.  You may need a towel or pad under your knees.  Knees should be hip distance apart.  Place your hands on your lower back and start to bend backwards while at the same time pushing your hips forward and lengthening the spine.  It is important to keep the spine long while moving into a backbend.  As you move into your backbend, slowly slide your hands down the back of your legs.  You may lift your heels up by placing your toes on the floor.  If it is comfortable, you may plance your hands on your ankles.  Enjoy the pose for about 10 breaths. Be sure your body is warm before attempting this pose.

Once you have completed the backbend, be sure to follow it with a childs pose or a forward fold as shown below.  This will help counter-balance the backbend.

What is yoga?

Have you noticed how yoga has evolved in the last 10 years.  Once known as a practice for those who can only afford to fly to India is now a practice you can do anywhere you go including city parks.  Yoga can hlep you build cardiovascular fitness, strength, stamina, balance, flexibility, and peace of mind.  The only reason why we lose some of these important things about our bodies is because we become to complacent about growing old and then we quit moving.  We can prevent many of things that happen to our bodies which we blame on aging.  Yoga can offer many ways to stay young.
Yoga was originally designed 5,000 years ago by men in India that only wanted to find a way to ease the mind.  They created a way to use the body and the breath to quiet the mind.  Here in the west we have lost most of that tradition and turned yoga into a fitness class and not a mind and body class.  The breathing techniques have been removed along with sounding mantras and chanting.
You can still find some of the history on why we do yoga by reading about the 8 limbs of yoga.  A simple list of them includes the 1.  Yamas (morals guide) 2.  Niyamas (self growth) 3.  Asana (posture) 4.  Pranayama (breathwork) 5.  Pratyhara (sense withdrawal) 6.  Dharana (concentration) 7. Dhyana (meditation)
8.  Samadhi (union).
Next time you go to a yoga class, try to incorporate some of these practices into your class.

Honey of a deal!

Hoeny is one of the sweetest food found in nature.  It has been known for it's medicinal properties beacuse of its mineral content.  Some of the minerals can be copper, calcium, zinc, and iron.  Honey also contains compounds like flavonoids and phenolic acid that act like antioxidants.  Raw honey is the best and the darker it is the better it is.
It has been said tht buying local honey can help ease allergy symptons but no studies have been done to back the statement.  Penn state College of medicine research team found that by giving honey to children before they go to bed will help ease coughing symptons.  Honey is also antibacterial and does not need additives to prolong shelf life.
Honey will also increase your energy level.  Next time you go to workout take a teaspoon of honey before you go.  It helps to instantly boost the performance, endurance and reduce muscle fatigue of athletes.  As we mentioned above, it is a great immune booster.  Honey also possesses carcinogen-preventing and anti-tumour properties! Read: Honey is Anti-Cancer!  Honey has also been known to cure yeast infection, athletes footand arthritis pain.  It's antibacterial properties also help to fight infection.  Honey also helps to soothe a sore throat.  By adding a teaspoon of honey to warm milk or chamomile tea and sipping on it before you go to bed will help you sleep better at night.
Do your own research and find out what you can about honey!

Our day of skiing...

My husband and I went skiing this weekend.  We both compromise and try to share what we enjoy doing with each other.  We do our best to be as humble as we can even when we don't like it.  Sometimes we fail at humbleness and this is what happens.  We were riding on the chairlift and I mentioned how much I love skiing.  Skiing was in my blood when I was born so I am very passionate about it.  On the other hand, my husband has his own thoughts that are sometimes best not shared.  He said,"If you weren't around, I would not ski."  I curiously asked him "why" because he is so good as skiing.  He said, "Because it is too dangerous."  I suggested that rising out of bed in the morning has it's own danger and that perhaps this is time to "keep his thoughts to himself."  He chuckled and we made it to the top of the hill safely.  After he suggested that skiing was dangeros I began to think about his hunting.  This is a man who walks in the woods with a loaded gun where many other strangers are walking around with loaded guns and he feels that is safe.  This is also a man who has shot over my head during duck hunting and felt that was safe.  Although, I see danger in shooting over the head of my partner so I withdraw and the duck lives!  What determines danger and safety anyway?  Any answers out there?

Laugh it off in yoga!

Have you heard the buzz about laughter yoga?  Studies have shown us that laughter has a multitude of benefits.  Laughter reduces blood pressure, increases pain reliever endorphins, reduces levels of cortisol a stress hormone and boosts the immune system.  The Loma Linda University's research has found that the benefits of laughter are the same as the benefits of moderate exercises.
In laughter yoga the warmup starts with laughter, games and greeting each other in full bursts of laughter.  Is there a better way to begin or end a day?  Next time you have the opportunity to join a laughter yoga class, don't shy away.  The oxygen channel used to have a yoga class where they danced and laughed in their yoga poses.  I remember doing yoga with them once thinking, "How fun is this?"  Never be afraid to express yourself.  Find a yoga class that's fun!  Check us out here at Simple Pleasures!
